Laurie Comstock on mobile genetic elements in the gut microbiome

On 6 May, we are excited to host Laurie Comstock, Professor of Microbiology at the University of Chicago, in the NCCR online Seminar Series.

The Comstock lab studies the human gut microbiome and the community dynamics of its bacterial members, especially the predominant order of the Bacteroidales. They examine complex bacterial interactions by using microbiological techniques and germ-free mice systems combined with omics and computational analyses. One important focus of the lab is the evolution of gut microbes and the importance that horizontal gene transfer plays in competitive interactions between species.

Laurie Comstock has pursued her research at the University of Maryland Medical Center and at Harvard Medical School, before joining the University of Chicago in 2021.

Prof. Comstock will give a talk entitled ‘Mobile genetic elements in gut Bacteroidales: phenotypes and fitness’. The seminar will take place on 6 May 2025, from 14h00 to 15h00 CEST. You can access this public seminar through this Zoom link.
