Maria Luisa Balmer on host-microbiota interaction in the gut
On 2 April 2024, the NCCR Microbiomes Seminar Series is thrilled to host Prof. Maria Luisa Balmer, from the University of Bern and Inselspital.
Maria Luisa Balmer studies the complex interaction between bacteria, metabolism and immune function in the human gut, with an overall research focus on obesity and diabetes. She notably uses germ-free mice models and selected bacterial species to tease out causal relationships between gut microbes and weight gain. Moreover, her group investigates the effect of dietary fibre on the gut microbiome in a clinical study involving obese children.
Maria Luisa Balmer was awarded a SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship in 2020. Last year, Prof. Balmer was awarded the prestigious Marie Heim-Vögtlin Prize 2023 by the Swiss National Science Foundation in recognition of her research accomplishments.
Maria Luisa Balmer will give a talk entitled ‘Metabolic communication between the microbiota and the host’. The seminar will take place on 2 April 2024, from 12h00 to 13h00 CEST. You can access this public seminar through this Zoom link.
