Marie Schölmerich on anaerobic microbes and greenhouse gases

On 1 April, the NCCR Microbiomes Seminar Series is thrilled to host Marie Schölmerich, Professor in the Department of Environmental Systems Science at ETH Zurich.

Marie Schölmerich’s group studies anaerobic bacteria and archaea and their role in the biogeochemical cycles of two key greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and methane, with a focus on peatlands ecosystems. The group’s methodological approaches include environmental metagenomics, laboratory cultivation and microcosms, and computational microbiology.

After pursuing her research in Hamburg University and UC Berkeley, Marie Schölmerich joined ETH Zürich in 2023 as Assistant Professor of Environmental Microbiology. In 2024, she was awarded an SNSF Starting Grant for her project “New Drivers of Microbial Methane Cycling”.

Prof. Schölmerich will give a talk entitled ‘Global distribution of an ancient metabolic pathway’. The seminar will take place on 1 April 2025, from 12h00 to 13h00 CEST. You can access this public seminar through this Zoom link.
