Kirsten Küsel on aquatic geomicrobiology

On November 3rd 2026, the NCCR Microbiomes Seminar Series is pleased to welcome Kirsten Küsel, Professor at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Germany.

Prof. Kirsten Küsel is a microbiologist and Professor of Aquatic Geomicrobiology at the University of Jena whose research explores how microbial communities influence ecosystem functioning and the cycling of essential elements. Her work focuses particularly on groundwater and deep subsurface environments, investigating how microorganisms survive under limited energy and nutrient availability and how they respond to environmental change. She also explores how ancient microbial DNA preserved in rocks can reveal insights into past microbial life and Earth’s environmental history.

Kirsten Küsel will give a talk titled “Balance of the Groundwater Microbiome”. The seminar will take place on Tuesday 3 November 2026, from 12h00 to 13h00 CET.
