NCCR Microbiomes at Scientifica 2021

On Saturday 4 September and Sunday 5 September, Scientifica 2021 will take place in Zurich. The topic ‘Synthetic naturally’ will be explored through workshops, exhibition stands, lectures and science cafés. The NCCR Microbiomes will be present with an exhibition booth and a workshop.

We mostly associate microbes with disease, but the vast majority of microbes around us are essential for life: for example, the bacteria that live in our intestines help to digest food and produce vitamins. Microbes help plants absorb nutrients from the soil that are necessary for their growth. In our sewage treatment plants, microbes clean wastewater before it is discharged into lakes and rivers. In our factories, they produce medicines and chemicals…

Most microbes do not work alone: they form large communities where many different species interact and depend on each other. Life on Earth would be impossible without these microbial communities.

Visit our booth at the Lichthof of the University of Zurich to find out more about our research on microbial communities and to meet researchers from the NCCR Microbiomes. Visualise microbial communities in real time and discover what microbes live on your hands, in the soil or in the animals and plants that are near you.

Explore how microorganisms move, feed and interact with their environment and with each other at the workshop ‘Spying on the lives of Microbes’ on campus Hönggerberg.
